change to 64 bit Ubuntu?

This is an argument collection page.

Current stabile configuration is 32 bit Ubuntu version 12.04 - Long Time Stable

32-bit

  • Kernel 3.2.0-XX
  • GCC version 4.6.3

Pro

  • 32 bit is the recommended by Ubuntu
  • Mobotware runs on 32-bit

Contra

  • Newer versions of Matlab runs on 64 bit only

64 bit

  • kernel: 3.8.0-21-generic
  • GCC:4.6 is OK (4.7 do not compile with boost)

Pro

  • Newer versions of Matlab runs on 64 bit only
  • Some parts of ROS runs 64-bit only (guidemark calibration)
  • Many (students) has installed 64 bit on their laptop

Contra

  • Not all parts of mobotware compiles well on 64-bit - AURS auview and aupcltest requires -fpermissive in Makefile (effect unknown)
